Starting an online store in Las Vegas, NV: which licenses and registrations do I need?

The owner asked: “I am starting an online store in Las Vegas. What do I need to start my LLC, and do I need an LLC or a seller's permit?”

You are off to a smart start by sorting out the paperwork first. An online store can sell to customers across the country from a laptop, and marketplaces bring shoppers to you without a storefront. Since your goals are to protect your personal assets, limit exposure from sales, clients, employees, or debt and raise capital or sell shares, the LLC sits at the center of this plan. Below we walk through the three things every new business in Nevada sorts out (structure, tax IDs, and licenses) and then sum it all up.

You do not need an LLC to sell online, and an LLC does not replace a seller's permit, because they do two different jobs. The LLC protects your personal assets and gives the store a credible name for banks, and its operating agreement is where any investors or shares get spelled out. The Nevada seller's permit lets you buy inventory without paying sales tax and collect it from customers. Every Nevada business also needs a Nevada state business license. With three people on the team, you will open a state unemployment account, but Nevada has no wage withholding account. Form the LLC first so everything else is filed in its name.

What your online store needs

  1. LLC (limited liability company) – An LLC keeps business debts and lawsuits separate from your personal home and savings. A supplier who claims you owe for an unpaid order can sue the company, and the LLC keeps that claim away from your personal savings. Once profits grow, an LLC can elect S corporation tax treatment, which can lower self-employment tax; ask a tax adviser when the numbers justify it. If you plan to sell shares to investors, a corporation may fit better later, and an LLC can convert when that day comes.
  2. DBA (doing business as) – If you plan to operate under a brand name instead of your own name or your LLC's exact name, register that name first.
  3. EIN (federal tax ID number) – You plan on 3 employees, so the federal tax ID number (EIN) is required for payroll, and you will also use it for the business bank account and supplier accounts.
  4. Nevada seller's permit – Register before the first sale. If online orders from another state grow large, that state may expect you to register there too, since each state sets its own sales threshold.
  5. Nevada employer ID – With 3 employees, you need a state employer account number for unemployment insurance. Nevada has no state income tax on wages, so there is no withholding account to open, which is one less form to file.
  6. Business license – Nevada requires a state business license for most businesses, and you will usually need a local business license in Las Vegas as well.

By the numbers: Banks, insurers, and tax forms will ask for your industry code. For an online store it is NAICS 452319 (All Other General Merchandise Stores), 455219 under the 2022 update. With 3 employees planned, you are already creating jobs in Las Vegas. That makes 6 items on your list.

Tip: Learn each state's sales tax collection rules, since many states require online sellers to register once sales pass a certain level.

To recap: Your online store in Las Vegas, NV needs an LLC, a DBA if you use a brand name, an EIN, a sales tax permit, a state employer ID, and a business license. With the paperwork done, the fun part begins: serving your first customers.

How do I get an online store in San Antonio, TX licensed and registered?

Majah wrote: “I will be making and selling T-shirts and accessories on my website. I will buy materials wholesale and make and sell from my home.”

Hi Majah, The Texas Heat Boutique sounds like a promising venture. Trying new products is cheap and fast online, so you can follow trends and drop what doesn't sell. Since your goals are to limit exposure from sales, clients, employees, or debt and manage self-employment tax, the LLC sits at the center of this plan. In this answer you will find the business structure, the tax registrations, and the local and industry licenses for The Texas Heat Boutique, plus a short recap at the end.

Making what you sell changes the tax picture in Texas: materials that become part of the finished shirt can be bought with a resale certificate, while tools, printers, and packaging are taxed when you buy them. Your finished shirts and accessories are taxable sales, so you will need a sales and use tax permit and a way to collect it from Texas buyers on your website. Keep a record of materials per product so your pricing covers them. An LLC fits a boutique with a name like The Texas Heat Boutique, and a quick trademark search before printing tags avoids a surprise letter. Home production with no employees keeps compliance light.

What The Texas Heat Boutique needs

  1. LLC (limited liability company) – Forming an LLC puts a legal wall between the business and your personal assets. A supplier who claims you owe for an unpaid order can sue the company, and the LLC keeps that claim away from your personal savings. Once profits grow, an LLC can elect S corporation tax treatment, which can lower self-employment tax; ask a tax adviser when the numbers justify it.
  2. Texas assumed name certificate – If you operate as a sole proprietor, or under a name different from your LLC's exact legal name, registering "The Texas Heat Boutique" lets you use it on signs, invoices, and your business bank account.
  3. EIN (federal tax ID number) – Think of the EIN as a Social Security number for the business: banks, suppliers, and clients who send you tax forms will all ask for it.
  4. Texas sales and use tax permit – You will be selling taxable goods, so register to collect sales tax before your first sale. It also lets you buy inventory for resale without paying tax on it.
  5. Business license – Most places require a local business license to operate, including home-based businesses. Check the rules where The Texas Heat Boutique will operate in San Antonio, and ask about home occupation and zoning rules if you work from home. If you rent, many permits ask for the landlord's written consent to run a business from the property.

By the numbers: Banks, insurers, and tax forms will ask for your industry code. For an online store it is NAICS 452319 (All Other General Merchandise Stores), 455219 under the 2022 update. That makes 5 items on your list.

Tip: Check that each product meets safety rules, especially toys and electronics, and keep supplier documentation on file.

To recap: The Texas Heat Boutique in San Antonio, TX needs an LLC, a DBA, an EIN, a sales tax permit, and a business license. Get those in place and you can spend your time on customers instead of paperwork.

I need advice on business insurance, finding investors, a website and advertising for my record label. Does the LLC service include the state fee and an operating agreement?
10/14/2026 5:04 AM

For a record label, an LLC is the right base. You handle artists' contracts, royalties and releases, and the LLC separates any dispute from your personal assets. The state's filing charge is shown apart from our service fee on the order page, and the operating agreement is prepared with your LLC, so your bank can open the account.

• Insurance: ask an insurance agent about general liability and media liability for a label, plus coverage for equipment.
• Investors: they usually want a formed LLC, an operating agreement and clean books first, then a clear plan for how their money is used.
• Website and advertising: register the name and open the bank account before you spend on promotion.

A surety bond is not what you need. Insurance protects you from claims, while bonds guarantee performance in certain regulated trades.

Do I need an LLC and a tax ID if my items are not taxable in my state? I also need to register a business at an address in Georgia.
10/14/2026 5:04 AM

Yes, an LLC still makes sense even when your products are not taxable. Taxability is only about sales tax, while the LLC is about protecting your personal assets from product and customer claims, and about credibility. With investors in mind, a formal company is what they will want to see.

On the tax ID, you still need an EIN for banking and federal taxes, since that is separate from sales tax. A seller's permit may not be needed if everything you sell is exempt, but many suppliers and marketplaces still ask for one, so check with them. Health and beauty products can be taxable in other places, so check where you sell.

For the Georgia address, I cannot supply an office location. Register the business at the real place where you operate, or use a registered agent's address for state papers. A local business license depends on that location.

I live in New York and want to start a mobile petting zoo. I also want to sell gift baskets by taking the order and having a company ship it. What do I need, and can I charge sales tax?
10/14/2026 5:04 AM

A mobile petting zoo carries real risk, since children and animals mix and a bite or a fall could lead to a claim. An LLC is the proper vehicle, because it separates that exposure from your personal assets, and it can bring in investors. A foreign owner is fine for an LLC.

• Petting zoo: animal exhibits are regulated, so expect animal health paperwork, permits for events, and liability insurance that venues will ask for.
• Business license, locally, plus approvals for each event location.
• EIN, for banking and taxes.

For the gift baskets, to charge sales tax you need a seller's permit, which in New York is registered as a certificate of authority. Even if you never touch the product or the money, if you take the order and your company is the seller, you generally must be registered to collect tax. If the other company is the seller of record, it may handle that, so clarify who sells.

How long does it take to get a reseller's permit in New York with expedited service? I do not have a certificate of authority for my LLC. I also have questions about zoning for a home inspection business.
10/14/2026 5:04 AM

In New York, the sales tax registration is called a certificate of authority, and a reseller's permit is built on it, so you do need one for your LLC. We can file it with expedited handling, which moves faster than standard processing, but I cannot promise a specific number of days because timing depends on the application.

Home inspection is a service, so the permit matters mainly if you also sell products or tools that are taxable. Your LLC fits the business well: inspectors face claims when something is missed, and the LLC separates those from your personal assets.

• Zoning: a home office is usually allowed, but you do not need a vote from the town council in most cases. Ask locally whether a home occupation approval applies.
• Professional license: home inspectors are licensed in many places, so confirm before you take clients.

File the certificate of authority well before your first sale, since New York asks that you register in advance.

What license do I need to buy seafood in Louisiana, transport it to Tennessee and sell it to restaurants and the public, and do I need a wholesale license?
10/14/2026 5:04 AM

Form an LLC before anything else. Moving fresh shrimp and other seafood across state lines involves spoilage, illness and vehicle risks, and the LLC protects your personal assets while showing restaurants that they are dealing with an established company. A foreign owner can hold an LLC, too.

• EIN, for the account, payroll and supplier accounts.
• Seller's permit: it works as your wholesale and resale registration, so you can buy without tax and sell with tax. You may need one wherever you sell.
• Seafood dealer permit: seafood is regulated at each step, including buying, cold storage and delivery, so ask where your product is sourced and sold.
• Business license, locally.

Whether you open a fish market or a restaurant, each needs its own food permits and inspections.
