Starting a lawn care service in Katy, TX: which licenses and registrations do I need?

Deveriq wrote: “We offer landscaping and lawn care, including yards, gardening, and more. We will be selling our services locally.”

Hi Deveriq, Landscaping-4-YWHW sounds like a promising venture. Homeowners would rather spend weekends relaxing than mowing, so neat lawns and dependable visits keep customers for years. Since your goals are to limit exposure from sales, clients, employees, or debt, the LLC sits at the center of this plan. Below we walk through the three things every new business in Texas sorts out (structure, tax IDs, and licenses) and then sum it all up.

Landscaping in Texas is a taxable service, which surprises many new owners, so you register for a sales and use tax permit, charge tax on your lawn work, and keep it separate from your own money. Mowing and gardening need no license, but spraying weed killers or pesticides for pay does, as does installing irrigation, so decide early whether to offer either. Katy has many neighborhoods with HOA rules about trucks and trailers, so ask before parking equipment at home. An LLC keeps a thrown rock, a damaged sprinkler head, or a mower accident from reaching your house, and one employee means only a Texas unemployment account.

What Landscaping-4-YWHW needs

  1. LLC (limited liability company) – Forming an LLC puts a legal wall between the business and your personal assets. A trimmer that cuts a client's irrigation line or cable could lead to a dispute, and an LLC protects your house from it.
  2. Texas assumed name certificate – If you operate as a sole proprietor, or under a name different from your LLC's exact legal name, registering "Landscaping-4-YWHW" lets you use it on signs, invoices, and your business bank account.
  3. EIN (federal tax ID number) – You plan on 1 employee, so the federal tax ID number (EIN) is required for payroll, and you will also use it for the business bank account and supplier accounts.
  4. Texas employer ID – With 1 employee, you need a state employer account number for unemployment insurance. Texas has no state income tax on wages, so there is no withholding account to open, which is one less form to file.
  5. Business license – Most places require a local business license to operate, including home-based businesses. Check the rules where Landscaping-4-YWHW will operate in Katy, and ask about home occupation and zoning rules if you work from home.
  6. Pesticide applicator license – If you spray weed killer or fertilizer for clients, most states require a commercial applicator license.

By the numbers: Banks, insurers, and tax forms will ask for your industry code. For a lawn care service it is NAICS 561730 (Landscaping Services). With 1 employee planned, you are already creating jobs in Katy. That makes 6 items on your list.

Tip: Offer weekly or biweekly service agreements so you can plan routes and keep income predictable.

To recap: Landscaping-4-YWHW in Katy, TX needs an LLC, a DBA, an EIN, a state employer ID, a business license, and pesticide applicator license. Check them off one by one and you will open with confidence.

What licenses and registrations do I need to start a lawn care service in Piedmont, SC?

The owner wrote: “I am 19 years old and started my own business by myself with no help from anyone. I want to help people by cutting their grass at affordable prices. I don't use eBay or Amazon, just face to face.”

Hagood's Lawn Care is an exciting name to see on a new business in Piedmont. Homeowners would rather spend weekends relaxing than mowing, so neat lawns and dependable visits keep customers for years. The LLC comes first here, because it decides who is responsible when something goes wrong. Here is what we will cover: how to structure Hagood's Lawn Care, the tax IDs it needs, and the licenses that let you open in Piedmont, then a quick recap.

Starting a lawn business on your own at 19 is the kind of hustle clients remember, and South Carolina keeps the basics light: no special license to mow, but a local business license in the town where you work, and a license if you ever spray weed killers or pesticides for pay. Lawn care is generally not subject to sales tax, so records are simple: a receipt book or phone app. The true risk is a flying rock through a window or a mower running over a sprinkler head, which is why an LLC and basic liability insurance are worth the small effort. Write down your service price and schedule for each customer so face-to-face deals stay clear.

What Hagood's Lawn Care needs

  1. LLC (limited liability company) – An LLC keeps business debts and lawsuits separate from your personal home and savings. A trimmer that cuts a client's irrigation line or cable could lead to a dispute, and an LLC protects your house from it.
  2. DBA (doing business as) registration – Registering "Hagood's Lawn Care" tells the public who stands behind the name. If you form an LLC under that exact name, the LLC filing itself protects the name and a separate DBA is usually unnecessary.
  3. EIN (federal tax ID number) – You plan on 1 employee, so the federal tax ID number (EIN) is required for payroll, and you will also use it for the business bank account and supplier accounts.
  4. South Carolina employer ID – With 1 employee, you need a state employer account number for payroll withholding and unemployment insurance. It works like the EIN, but for state payroll taxes.
  5. Business license – Governments license businesses so they can collect a modest tax, usually based on gross receipts or a flat yearly amount, and keep inspectors checking safety: exits, fire extinguishers, and how many people a space can hold. Plan on one for Hagood's Lawn Care in Piedmont.
  6. Pesticide applicator license – If you spray weed killer or fertilizer for clients, most states require a commercial applicator license.

By the numbers: Banks, insurers, and tax forms will ask for your industry code. For a lawn care service it is NAICS 561730 (Landscaping Services). With 1 employee planned, you are already creating jobs in Piedmont. That makes 6 items on your list.

I need advice on business insurance, finding investors, a website and advertising for my record label. Does the LLC service include the state fee and an operating agreement?
10/14/2026 5:04 AM

For a record label, an LLC is the right base. You handle artists' contracts, royalties and releases, and the LLC separates any dispute from your personal assets. The state's filing charge is shown apart from our service fee on the order page, and the operating agreement is prepared with your LLC, so your bank can open the account.

• Insurance: ask an insurance agent about general liability and media liability for a label, plus coverage for equipment.
• Investors: they usually want a formed LLC, an operating agreement and clean books first, then a clear plan for how their money is used.
• Website and advertising: register the name and open the bank account before you spend on promotion.

A surety bond is not what you need. Insurance protects you from claims, while bonds guarantee performance in certain regulated trades.

Do I need an LLC and a tax ID if my items are not taxable in my state? I also need to register a business at an address in Georgia.
10/14/2026 5:04 AM

Yes, an LLC still makes sense even when your products are not taxable. Taxability is only about sales tax, while the LLC is about protecting your personal assets from product and customer claims, and about credibility. With investors in mind, a formal company is what they will want to see.

On the tax ID, you still need an EIN for banking and federal taxes, since that is separate from sales tax. A seller's permit may not be needed if everything you sell is exempt, but many suppliers and marketplaces still ask for one, so check with them. Health and beauty products can be taxable in other places, so check where you sell.

For the Georgia address, I cannot supply an office location. Register the business at the real place where you operate, or use a registered agent's address for state papers. A local business license depends on that location.

I live in New York and want to start a mobile petting zoo. I also want to sell gift baskets by taking the order and having a company ship it. What do I need, and can I charge sales tax?
10/14/2026 5:04 AM

A mobile petting zoo carries real risk, since children and animals mix and a bite or a fall could lead to a claim. An LLC is the proper vehicle, because it separates that exposure from your personal assets, and it can bring in investors. A foreign owner is fine for an LLC.

• Petting zoo: animal exhibits are regulated, so expect animal health paperwork, permits for events, and liability insurance that venues will ask for.
• Business license, locally, plus approvals for each event location.
• EIN, for banking and taxes.

For the gift baskets, to charge sales tax you need a seller's permit, which in New York is registered as a certificate of authority. Even if you never touch the product or the money, if you take the order and your company is the seller, you generally must be registered to collect tax. If the other company is the seller of record, it may handle that, so clarify who sells.

How long does it take to get a reseller's permit in New York with expedited service? I do not have a certificate of authority for my LLC. I also have questions about zoning for a home inspection business.
10/14/2026 5:04 AM

In New York, the sales tax registration is called a certificate of authority, and a reseller's permit is built on it, so you do need one for your LLC. We can file it with expedited handling, which moves faster than standard processing, but I cannot promise a specific number of days because timing depends on the application.

Home inspection is a service, so the permit matters mainly if you also sell products or tools that are taxable. Your LLC fits the business well: inspectors face claims when something is missed, and the LLC separates those from your personal assets.

• Zoning: a home office is usually allowed, but you do not need a vote from the town council in most cases. Ask locally whether a home occupation approval applies.
• Professional license: home inspectors are licensed in many places, so confirm before you take clients.

File the certificate of authority well before your first sale, since New York asks that you register in advance.

What license do I need to buy seafood in Louisiana, transport it to Tennessee and sell it to restaurants and the public, and do I need a wholesale license?
10/14/2026 5:04 AM

Form an LLC before anything else. Moving fresh shrimp and other seafood across state lines involves spoilage, illness and vehicle risks, and the LLC protects your personal assets while showing restaurants that they are dealing with an established company. A foreign owner can hold an LLC, too.

• EIN, for the account, payroll and supplier accounts.
• Seller's permit: it works as your wholesale and resale registration, so you can buy without tax and sell with tax. You may need one wherever you sell.
• Seafood dealer permit: seafood is regulated at each step, including buying, cold storage and delivery, so ask where your product is sourced and sold.
• Business license, locally.

Whether you open a fish market or a restaurant, each needs its own food permits and inspections.
